About the class
The goal of this special IAP Learning Opportunity is to provide participants with a “how to” decarbonization manual, along with experiential learning opportunities through workshop activities and field trips to Net Zero buildings in the greater Boston area.
Elements of this Learning Opportunity include:
- how to calculate a carbon footprint of a person, building, campus, city, country
- earning the basic science and engineering of decarbonization
- examining case studies of 4th and 5th Generation geothermal district energy systems, such as the 1st 100% net zero campus, Colorado Mesa University
- taking a deep dive into a D-Lab, Geo@MIT student team + MIT Alumni for Climate Action proposal for “100% Decarbonization of MIT Campus by 2035 via 6th Generation Geothermal District Heating and Cooling”
- several field trips to Net Zero Buildings in the greater Boston area
Schedule and registration
This class is available online, in-person, and hybrid and open to members of the MIT community only.

Rick Clemenzi and Judy Siglin own Geothermal Design Center, a licensed geothermal specialty engineering firm, and Asheville Geothermal, a Geothermal Specialty HVAC Contracting firm. They also founded Net Zero Foundation to educate about Decarbonization using Advanced Geothermal Heat Pump systems. They won the 2016 MIT Climate CoLab MIT Campus Decarbonization competition presenting an early GDHC solution specifically targeted to MIT's campus. Rick is a Certified GeoExchange Designer (CGD), and sits on the C-448 ANSI/CSA Bi-National Ground Source Heat Pump Design and Installation Standard's Technical Committee. In addition, Rick has been an IGSHPA trainer. The Geothermal Design Center/Rick holds several Accredited Installer trainings in Asheville for area contractors. Rick has both AI and Certified Geothermal Driller qualifications.
